Using these words in class

How this list was built
Every word was cut into its graphemes and dated against the sequence, so a word appears at the first lesson where a child could sound out all of it — nothing on this page uses a spelling taught after lesson 53.
Each word was then checked against the CMU pronouncing dictionary, because plenty of words look decodable and are not. Of has one vowel letter and one vowel sound and belongs in no short-o list — it says /uv/, and it is a heart word, learned by sight. Every vowel spelling here has to actually say the sound its lesson teaches, which is why some lists are shorter than you might expect. Short is better than wrong.
