Our Commitment
Veloris, LLC (d/b/a SpellingJoy) is committed to ensuring that our platform is accessible to all users, including students, teachers, and parents with disabilities. We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, as well as applicable federal and state accessibility requirements, including:
- Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including the Department of Justice's final rule on web and mobile app accessibility (effective June 24, 2024)
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
- Colorado House Bill 21-1110 and its implementing regulations (C.R.S. §§ 24-85-101 et seq.)
- Colorado House Bill 25-1152
Current Accessibility Features
SpellingJoy currently implements the following accessibility features:
Semantic HTML
Pages are built with semantic HTML5 elements (headings, landmarks, lists, buttons) to support screen readers and assistive technologies.
Keyboard Navigation
Core functionality is accessible via keyboard. Interactive elements are focusable and operable without a mouse.
Responsive Design
The platform is designed to work across screen sizes, from mobile devices to desktop monitors, supporting users who rely on zoom or magnification.
Text-to-Speech
Spelling words are read aloud to students using text-to-speech, supporting auditory learners and students who may have difficulty reading text on screen.
High Contrast Text
Primary text uses high-contrast color combinations. Core UI elements meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio requirements (4.5:1 for normal text).
No Flashing Content
The platform does not contain content that flashes more than three times per second, in compliance with WCAG 2.3.1.
No CAPTCHA
Students access the platform via class codes without CAPTCHA, login forms, or other barriers that can be inaccessible.
Accessibility Roadmap
We are actively working to improve accessibility across the platform. The following are known areas for improvement and our planned remediation timeline:
Alt text for images
Ensuring all decorative and informational images have appropriate alt text or are marked as decorative.
Interim workaround: Core functionality (spelling practice, progress tracking) does not depend on images.
ARIA labels and roles
Adding comprehensive ARIA labels to interactive components, modals, and dynamic content areas.
Interim workaround: Semantic HTML provides baseline screen reader support. Interactive elements use native HTML buttons and links.
Focus management in modals
Ensuring keyboard focus is properly trapped within modal dialogs and returned to the triggering element on close.
Interim workaround: Users can press Escape to close modals. Tab navigation continues to work within the page.
Color contrast in game elements
Reviewing and improving color contrast in the spelling game UI, particularly for letter tiles and score displays.
Interim workaround: Text-to-speech is available for all spelling words, reducing reliance on visual elements.
Screen reader testing
Comprehensive testing with NVDA, VoiceOver, and JAWS screen readers across all user flows.
Interim workaround: Platform uses semantic HTML and standard form elements that provide baseline screen reader compatibility.
Formal VPAT (WCAG 2.1 Level AA)
Complete a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) version 2.5 documenting conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA across all modules and features.
Interim workaround: This accessibility roadmap serves as an interim disclosure of our current conformance status.
Testing Tools and Methods
We evaluate accessibility using the following tools and methods:
- Automated scanning with axe DevTools and Lighthouse accessibility audits
- Manual keyboard navigation testing across all primary user flows
- Browser-based screen reader testing (VoiceOver on macOS)
- Color contrast analysis using WebAIM Contrast Checker
