Running a spelling bee

How many words should a spelling bee list have?

A classroom bee usually runs on 20 to 30 words per round, so most teachers print one grade list and work down it. School-level bees tend to draw from a wider pool across two or three grade levels, because the last few spellers will exhaust an on-level list quickly.

What words are on a grade 3 spelling bee list?

Grade 3 bees lean on two-syllable words with regular patterns, common homophones, and the first wave of irregular spellings such as "because" and "friend". The grade 3 list on this page is drawn from the same curriculum-aligned lists SpellingJoy uses in class.

Can I print the spelling bee list?

Yes. Choose a grade and press Print. The sheet prints on its own with a name line at the top and nothing else from the page, so it is ready to hand out.

Where do these words come from?

They come from SpellingJoy’s curriculum-aligned word lists, the same ones used for classroom practice and assessment. They are not generated or scraped.

How should students practise a spelling bee list?

Hearing the word matters more than reading it, because a bee is spoken. Copy the list into SpellingJoy and each word is read aloud, which is closer to the real thing than reading down a printed page.
