From Rain to Tap: The Water We Drink
Rain falls on a green hill and slides downhill into small streams. The streams meet and grow into a river. A tall wall called a dam holds part of that river back. The still water waiting behind the dam is a reservoir. First, a pump pulls water from the reservoir into a long pipe. Next, the water sinks slowly through a filter. A filter is a deep bed of sand and stone that traps mud, leaves and grit. Then workers test the water and add a safe cleaner that kills germs. After that, the clean water waits inside a tall tank. The tank stands high above the town. Because it sits so high, gravity pushes the water down into pipes that run under every street. When you turn the tap, water climbs up one last pipe and rushes into your sink. The rain from that hill finally lands in your glass. Water follows the same sequence every time. Skip one step and the water is unsafe. Every drop you drink took the whole trip.
