Watch for this: children often describe how Nadia feels without naming anything she actually does. When that happens, ask "which sentence shows that?" and read the line together. On day 2, if a spelling looks wrong, say the base word first, hop or hope, and then look at what changed. Never put a timer on any reading here.
The Bike That Would Not Turn
Nadia had waited all winter for the first warm Saturday. She rolled her bike out of the shed and hopped on. But when she pushed off, the handlebar sat crooked, and the front wheel pulled to the left. She stopped at the end of the driveway. Her brother Theo looked up from the porch. "Just ride it," he said. Nadia shook her head. She was hoping for a long ride to the river. She carried the toolbox out and knelt beside the front wheel. The bolt under the handlebar was stubborn. Nadia planned her first move. She would loosen the bolt, straighten the bar, and tighten it again. Her wrench kept sliding off. Twice the handlebar slipped back to crooked. Twice she stopped, breathed, and started over. "You have to adjust it a little at a time," Mom called from the garden. "Be patient with it." On the third try, the bar held straight. Nadia rode a slow circle in the driveway, and the wheel went exactly where she pointed it. By noon she was riding down the river path.
