The Lost Red Mitten
Students read a short story about Mia and Sam finding a lost mitten, then answer five questions about characters, setting, and plot with teacher and homeschool guidance.

On screen - your kid, alone
- 1Day 1 - Meet the story
- 2Day 2 - Word work
- 3Day 3 - What it means
- 4Day 4 - Fix & re-read
- 5Day 5 - Show what you know
Offline - with you
Print the pages for offline work together; the answer key is for you.
Read the story out loud together, then say, "Let's find out who the story is about, where it happens, and what happens." Ask your child to name the two characters (Mia and Sam) and the setting (the snowy playground). Then walk through the story in order: What did Mia lose first? What did Sam do to help? Where did they finally find the mitten? A good answer points back to something the story actually said, like "under the slide" or "by the swings." If your child gets stuck, reread just the sentence that holds the answer and point to the matching picture, then ask the question again. Keep it light and praise careful listening more than getting every answer right the first time.
The Lost Red Mitten
Mia and Sam went out to play. Snow was on the playground. Mia lost her red mitten! Sam ran to help. They looked by the swings. They looked by the bench. Sam saw it under the slide. Mia was so glad!
