Sit next to your child and read the passage out loud first, then ask them to read it with you, pointing to each word. Say something like, "Let's hunt for short vowel words — words like ham, zip, and pot. What vowel do you hear in the middle?" A strong answer is when your child can say the middle sound on its own (the /a/ in ham, the /i/ in zip) and can stretch the word into three sounds: /h/ /a/ /m/. If your child gets stuck, slow down and tap each sound on a finger, or hold up the word and cover the first and last letters so only the vowel shows. You can also grab real items from the kitchen — a cup, a nut, a bun, a lid — and have your child match each one to its written CVC word. Keep it short and playful; five to ten minutes of focused practice is plenty at this age.
My Lunchbox
I pack my bag. I zip it up. I tap the lid. In my bag, I has a bun with ham and jam. I has a red fig. I has a hot dog in a cup. I has a nut. I has a pot pie. My mom is a hen! I jet to the bus.
