Offline - with you

Print the pages for offline work together; the answer key is for you.

Sit next to your child with the page where you both can see it clearly, and say, "We are going to read about a class pet fish. Before we read the words, show me where to start." A good answer is your child pointing to the first word of the first sentence and then sweeping a finger left to right across the line. As you read together, pause and ask, "Can you find one word? Now can you find one letter inside that word?" — strong answers show that a word is a group of letters with spaces around it, and a letter is just one shape. Point to a period at the end of a line and ask what it tells the reader; you want to hear something like "stop" or "the sentence is done." If your child struggles, slow down and model it yourself: put your finger under the first word, say it, slide to the next word, and show how the space tells your finger to hop, then invite your child to copy exactly what you did on the next line.

Here is our fish. We see Bubbles swim. Look at the fin. It is my turn. We can see a fish. Bubbles has a fin. The fish can swim. Go look at Bubbles. Here is a fin. We see it swim. The fish is our pet. Look here.
