Before reading, point to the title and say, "This story is all about one thing. Let's find out what it is." Read the passage aloud together, then ask, "What is this story mostly about?" A strong answer will be something simple like "the pet fish" or "taking care of Bubbles" — not just one small detail like "the food" or "the tank." Follow up by asking your child to name one way the class takes care of Bubbles; good answers include feeding him, cleaning his tank, or watching him swim. If your child gets stuck, reread the passage and count together how many sentences mention Bubbles or the fish — this helps them see that the fish is the main idea because every sentence talks about him. Celebrate effort, and feel free to reread the passage a second or third time; repetition helps emerging readers feel confident.
Our Pet Fish Bubbles
We have a pet fish. His name is Bubbles. We give him fish food. We clean his tank each week. We watch Bubbles swim all day. Our class loves Bubbles a lot.
