Read the garden story out loud together first, then read it a second time and ask your child to listen for pairs of words that mean almost the same thing, like "big" and "large." To get started, you can say, "The author used two words that mean the same as 'happy.' Can you find them?" A strong answer points to both words in the passage ("happy and glad") and can explain that synonyms are different words with the same meaning. If your child gets stuck, reread just that sentence and offer a choice: "Does 'glad' mean happy or sad?" — narrowing it down helps them hear the match. After the questions, try a quick game where you say a word ("small," "shouted," "pretty") and your child gives you a synonym from the story. End by asking your child to use one new synonym pair in a sentence about your own kitchen or yard, so the learning sticks.

Harvest Day in the Garden

On a sunny morning, Mr. Lopez took his second grade class to the school garden. It was harvest day, and everyone felt happy and glad to help. The big, large tomatoes hung red on the vines. Maya pulled a carrot from the dirt. "Look at this small, tiny one!" she shouted. "Mine is pretty and lovely too!" yelled Ben from across the row. The class worked in quick, fast teams to fill baskets for the cafeteria. Some kids picked beans, while others tugged on leafy green tops. Mr. Lopez smiled at his busy class. "You are wonderful helpers," he said. By lunchtime, the baskets were full and heavy. The students felt tired and sleepy after all the hard work. They sat under the shady tree and rested. Mr. Lopez told them the cafeteria cooks would be glad to see such fresh food. It was a great harvest day.
