Read the passage about the Maple Street Library together, then tell your child, "We're going to look for important details. I'll ask who, what, where, when, and why questions, and you find the answer right in the story." Good answers point to a specific sentence — for example, when you ask when story hour happens, your child should say "Saturdays at 10am" and show you that line. Praise them for using the text instead of guessing from memory. If your child struggles, reread one paragraph at a time and ask just one question per paragraph, then underline or highlight the sentence that holds the answer. You can also turn it around and let your child quiz you, which builds confidence and helps them notice details on their own. Wrap up by asking your child to name one way the library helps kids on Maple Street.
Our Maple Street Library
The Maple Street Library helps kids in our neighborhood every week. Ms. Lopez is the librarian. She knows almost every kid by name. On Saturdays at 10am, she leads story hour for young readers. Kids sit on the rug and listen to fun books. Any kid can borrow free books with a library card. After school, Ms. Lopez gives homework help at the big table. She helps with math, spelling, and reading. In summer, kids join the summer reading club. They earn stickers and prizes for each book they read. The library is open six days a week. Many kids walk there with friends or family. Ms. Lopez says the library helps kids learn new things and love reading. Our library is a special place for every kid on Maple Street.
