Print the pages for offline work together; the answer key is for you.

Read the story aloud together, then say, "Let's think about who, where, and what happens." Ask your child to name the main character (Maya), the setting (her home, especially her bedroom, on Friday), and what happens at the beginning, middle, and end. A strong answer retells the story in order: Maya checks out a shark book, she cannot find it Friday morning and searches with Theo, and they find it under the bed and return it in time. If your child gets stuck, reread just one section and ask a smaller question like, "Where did Theo finally look?" or "What was Maya worried about?" You can also have your child point to the part of the passage that gave them the answer, which builds the habit of using text evidence. Finish by asking them to retell the whole story in three sentences using the words beginning, middle, and end.

The Lost Library Book

On Monday, Maya picked a book about sharks at the school library. The cover had a big gray fin and shiny teeth. Maya could not wait to read it at home. All week, Maya read about hammerheads and great whites. She kept the book on her nightstand each night. But on Friday morning, the book was gone! The library closed at three, and Maya felt her heart sink. "Theo, help me look!" Maya called to her little brother. They checked the kitchen table and the couch. They peeked behind her desk and inside her backpack. Theo even looked in the laundry basket. Then Theo crawled under Maya's bed. "I found it!" he shouted. The shark book was hiding by a sock. Maya hugged Theo tight. They raced to school and returned the book before the library closed. Maya smiled and picked a new book about whales.
