Read the model paragraph aloud together, then tell your child, "This writer wants a class hamster. Let's find the parts that make it a strong opinion paragraph." Ask them to point out the opinion sentence at the start, two reasons in the middle, and the closing sentence that wraps it up. A strong response will name the opinion ("our class should get a hamster"), give a real reason from the passage (it teaches responsibility, it is fun to watch, it is small and easy to care for), and spot linking words like "first," "also," or "another reason." For the writing prompt, look for a clear opinion sentence followed by the word "because" and one reason that makes sense, even if spelling is shaky. If your child gets stuck, try sentence frames like "I think our class should ______ because ______," and let them say the answer out loud before writing it down. Celebrate clear thinking over neat handwriting—the goal today is learning how an opinion is built.

Why We Need a Class Hamster

I think our class should get a hamster for a class pet. A hamster would make our classroom a happy place. I have three good reasons why this is a great idea. First, a hamster is small and easy to care for. We can keep it in a safe cage near the window. Also, taking care of a pet will help us learn to be responsible. We can take turns filling the food dish and cleaning the cage. Another reason is that a hamster is fun to watch. It can run on a wheel and hide in soft bedding. Watching a pet can help us feel calm when we work. For all these reasons, I believe a hamster is the best choice. It is small, it teaches us important jobs, and it is fun. Please vote yes for a class hamster!

What this lesson checks

  • Writing plan: The writer gave three reasons for getting a class hamster. Pretend you are the writer. Add one more reason to the paragraph. Write 2 or 3 sentences in the same kid-friendly voice. Start with a linking phrase like 'Another reason' or 'Also'. Give your new reason and one detail to back it up.
  • Writing plan: Your class is voting on a new question: Should our class have a longer recess? Write 2 or 3 sentences that share your opinion. Start with your opinion sentence. Then give one reason using the word 'because'. You can add a second reason using 'Also' or 'Another reason'.
  • Writing plan: The writer forgot to add a title to the opinion paragraph. A good title tells the reader what the writing is about and shows the writer's opinion. Write a short title (4 to 8 words) for this paragraph. Make sure your title shows that the writer wants a class hamster.
  • Writing plan: Here is a weak opinion draft a student wrote: 'I think our class should get a hamster. It would be good.' This draft has an opinion, but it does not give a real reason. Revise the draft. Keep the opinion, then add a reason using the word 'because'. You can also add one detail. Write 2 or 3 sentences.
