Start by reading the passage aloud once together, then ask your child to read it back and circle every word with "ai" or "ay" — these are the two spelling patterns we're practicing for the long-a sound. As they read, say something like, "When two vowels go walking, the first one often does the talking — so 'ai' and 'ay' both say the name of the letter A." A strong answer on the questions will show your child can hear that long-a sound, match it to the correct spelling (ai usually in the middle of a word like rain or pail, ay usually at the end like day or stay), and explain what happened in the story in their own words. If your child struggles, slow down and sort the circled words into two piles on a sheet of paper — one for "ai" words and one for "ay" words — and look for the pattern about where each team appears. You can also have them tap out the sounds in tricky words like "sailboat" or "puddles" before rereading the sentence. End by asking, "What was your favorite part of Jay and Gail's rainy day?" to make sure the reading made sense, not just the spelling.
A Rainy Day at the Bay
Jay and Gail ran to the bay on a gray, wet day. Rain fell in big drops and made a splash. Jay had on a red raincoat. Gail held a tin pail to catch the rain. "Can we stay and play?" said Jay. "Yes, we may!" said Gail. They saw a sailboat with a white sail. It bobbed on the waves in the bay. A small bird with a long tail sat on a post. Jay and Gail ran the long way down the path. They jumped in puddles and got wet. "Wait for me!" said Jay. Soon the rain went away. The sun came out to say hi. What a fun day at the bay!
What this lesson checks
- Sound correspondence: Which word from the story has the long-a sound spelled ai?
- Sound correspondence: Which word from the story ends with the long-a sound spelled ay?
- Sound correspondence: Which spelling pattern is used to make the long-a sound in the middle of a word like 'sail'?
- Sound correspondence: The story says Jay and Gail saw a small bird with a long tail. Write the word from that sentence that has the long-a sound, and tell whether it is spelled with ai or ay.
- Sound correspondence: Copy a short phrase from the story that shows a word ending in the long-a sound spelled ay.
- Sound correspondence: The word 'wait' and the word 'way' both have the long-a sound. Explain why they are spelled with different vowel teams.
