Read the passage aloud together first, then ask your child to find words where two vowels work as a team to make one sound, like "rain," "day," "see," "team," "boat," and "coat." Say something like, "Two vowels are teaming up in this word—can you spot them and tell me the sound they make together?" A strong answer names the two letters and the sound they spell, such as "a-i says /ay/ in rain," or "o-a says /oh/ in boat." If your child gets stuck, cover one word at a time with your finger and read it slowly, then have them underline the vowel team with a pencil so the pair stands out. For extra practice, sort the vowel team words from the story into little groups by their letters: put "rain" with "day" (the /ay/ sound, even though they are spelled with different teams), "see" with "team" (the long /ee/ sound), and "boat" with "coat" (the o-a team). Read each pair out loud and listen for the matching ending sound—"rain" and "day" rhyme, and so do "boat" and "coat." If your child wants to try making up rhymes, stick with simple ones like rain/train, day/play, see/bee, and boat/goat so the rhyming stays clear and fun. Keep it short and playful; five or ten minutes of noticing vowel teams is plenty for one sitting.
Rainy Day at the Boat Show
Ms. Hill's class went to see the boat show. It was a gray, rainy day by the lake. Sam had on a red coat. Jen and Tim led the way. We saw a green sailboat speed by. A team of kids ran to row a small boat. Rain fell, but we had fun all day.
