Before you start, sit beside your child and say, "This is an information page about hamsters. Let's see how the writer helps us find facts fast." Read the title together, then point out the two headings in big letters and ask your child what each section will tell us. Good answers show your child using the features on purpose — for example, pointing to "WHAT HAMSTERS EAT" when you ask where to learn about food, explaining that the bold word *pellets* means small, hard food bits, or using the picture caption to tell you where Pip sleeps. For the title question, a strong answer is something like, "It's about a class pet hamster, and the title tells me by naming Pip." If your child gets stuck, slow down and point to one feature at a time: "Headings are the dark words that start each part — try reading just those." You can also reread the sentence right around a bold word so the meaning becomes clear from the words nearby.
All About Hamsters
Our class has a pet hamster named Pip! **WHAT HAMSTERS EAT** Hamsters eat seeds and **pellets**. Pellets are small, hard food bits. They also like bits of carrot and apple. Fresh water helps them stay well. **WHERE HAMSTERS SLEEP** Hamsters sleep in a soft nest. They pile up bedding to feel safe. Pip sleeps in the day and plays at night. Picture: Pip sits in his nest made of soft paper bedding.
