Our Class Pet Vote
Students read a short scenario about choosing a class pet, then answer four questions and write their own opinion sentence with a reason, supported by teacher and homeschool guidance.

Offline - with you
Print the pages for offline work together; the answer key is for you.
Read the passage out loud together, then ask your child, "Which pet do you think would be best — the hamster, the goldfish, or the bunny? Why?" A strong answer names one pet and gives at least one clear reason, using the frame "I think ___ is the best pet because ___." For example: "I think the bunny is best because it is soft and fun to watch hop." If your child gets stuck choosing, let them pick the pet that sounds most fun to them — there is no wrong choice here. If they struggle to give a reason, point back to the passage and ask, "What does the hamster do? What does the bunny do?" to help them find a detail. Celebrate any opinion sentence with a reason, even a short one, since stating an opinion and backing it up is the whole goal.
Our Class Pet Vote
Mrs. Lee has big news. Our class gets a new pet! We can pick one of three pets. The first pick is a soft hamster. It can run in a wheel. The next pick is a gold fish. It swims in a tank. The last pick is a small bunny. It hops and likes to eat hay. Which pet do you think is best? Soon we will all vote. Get ready to share your idea!
What this lesson checks
- Writing plan: Pretend you are sharing your idea with the class. Pick the pet you think is best. Write 2 or 3 sentences that sound like the story. Start with: 'I think ___ is the best pet because ___.' Then add one more sentence with a reason.
- Writing plan: Your class can pick a new snack for snack time. The picks are apples, grapes, or crackers. Which snack do you think is best? Write 2 or 3 sentences. Start with: 'I think ___ is the best snack because ___.' Then add one more sentence to tell why.
- Writing plan: The story tells us about three pets, but it does not end with a closing sentence that wraps up the idea. Write ONE closing sentence that could go at the end. It should remind the reader about voting or picking the best pet.
- Writing plan: Here is a weak draft about the class pet vote: 'I think the bunny is the best pet. It is good.' This draft has an opinion, but the reason is too flat. Fix it! Rewrite the two sentences. Keep the opinion the same, but add a strong reason that tells WHY the bunny is the best. Use the frame: 'I think ___ is the best pet because ___.'
