Sit beside your child and read the short story about Peanut the hamster aloud together, then read it a second time and ask, "Can you point to a word that names a person, place, or thing?" Good answers will be concrete words straight from the story, like Peanut, hamster, cage, Sam, Mia, Mrs. Lee, classroom, wheel, water bottle, or carrot — your child should be able to point to the thing or picture it in their head. As you work through the questions, remind them that a noun is a naming word and try sorting a few together out loud: "Sam is a… person! Cage is a… thing! Classroom is a… place!" If your child struggles, slow down and act it out — touch a chair and say "thing," point to yourself and say "person," wave around the room and say "place," then reread one sentence at a time and find just one noun before moving on. Praise close tries, since noticing that Peanut names something is the real win, even if they aren't sure whether to call it a person or a thing. Finish by asking your child to tell you one noun they see in your own home, so the idea sticks beyond the lesson.
