Mia's Lost Lunchbox
Students read a short first-person narrative about Mia finding her lost lunchbox, answer four questions about story order, and write their own sequenced narrative with teacher and homeschool support.

Offline - with you
Print the pages for offline work together; the answer key is for you.
In this short story, Mia loses her lunchbox and retraces her steps to find it. Read the passage aloud together, then ask your child to point out what happened first, in the middle, and at the end. Strong answers will use the time-order words from the story (First, Then, Next, Last) and name the right events: Mia could not find her lunchbox, she checked her desk and cubby, and she found it in the library. For the writing prompt, help your child think of a real time they lost something, then say each sentence out loud before writing it down. If your child gets stuck, use the sentence frames as a fill-in-the-blank: "First, I lost my ____. Then, I looked ____. Last, I found it ____." Celebrate neat handwriting and complete sentences, even if the spelling is still growing.
Mia's Lost Lunchbox
First, I could not find my lunchbox. I felt sad and worried. Then I went back to my classroom. I looked by my desk, but it was not there. Next, I checked my cubby. My coat was there, but no lunchbox! Last, I ran to the library. My pink lunchbox was on a chair. I forgot it at story time. I felt so happy to find it!
What this lesson checks
- Writing plan: Mia found her lunchbox in the library. What happens next? Write 2 or 3 sentences to add to Mia's story. Tell what Mia does next. Use time-order words like Then or Next. Try to sound like Mia.
- Writing plan: Write a short story about a time you lost your hat at the park. Write 2 or 3 sentences. Use the time-order words First, Then, and Last to tell what happened.
- Writing plan: Mia's story does not tell what her lunchbox looked like inside or what was in it. Add one sentence to Mia's story that tells what she saw when she opened her lunchbox. Use words that help us see it. You can start with: When I opened it, I saw ___.
- Writing plan: Here is a weak story: "I lost my bag. I found it." This story is too short. It does not use time-order words like First, Then, or Last. Fix this story! Write 3 sentences about losing and finding the bag. Use First, Then, and Last to tell the steps, like Mia did in her story.
