Read the short paragraph about Bubbles out loud with your child, then read it again together. Ask, "What is this whole paragraph mostly about?" A strong answer will sound like "The class takes care of their pet fish" — not just one small detail like feeding him or cleaning the tank. You can also ask your child to pick a good title and explain why it fits the whole paragraph, not just one sentence. If your child names only one detail, gently say, "That is one thing they do. What are ALL the things they do?" Then list them together on your fingers (feed, clean, check the water, watch him swim) and ask what those things show. If they are still stuck, offer two choices, like "Is this mostly about feeding Bubbles, or mostly about taking care of Bubbles?" and let them choose. Praise thinking about the big idea, not just remembering words.
Our Pet Fish Bubbles
Our class has a pet fish. His name is Bubbles. We take good care of him each day. We feed him a bit of food in the morning. We clean his tank so the water stays clear. We check that the water is not too cold. We like to watch him swim and flip his tail. Bubbles is happy because we take care of him.
