Read the short passage out loud together first, then have your child read it back to you, pointing to each word. After reading, ask them to find three words that start with two consonant sounds blended together, like "plant," "green," or "stop" — good answers are ones where your child can say both sounds clearly, like /p/ + /l/ in "plant," not just one mushy sound. Then try a few ending blends together: say "hand," "jump," and "stump," and ask what two sounds they hear at the end. Strong answers will name both letters, like /n/ + /d/ in "hand." If your child struggles, slow down and stretch the word out with them, tapping one finger for each sound, then write the word and underline the blend so they can see and hear the two letters working as a team. End by asking them to spell one blend word from the story on paper or with letter tiles — "plot," "snap," or "send" are great choices.
Planting Day in the Garden
Ms. Glen's class ran to the green plot. Stan got a plant in his hand. "Stop and dig a spot," said Ms. Glen. Beth held the stem. Glen had a snip of grass. Snap! A twig fell on a stump. The kids sent damp seeds into the land. Plants will grow fast and bloom blue. The class felt glad.
