Sit next to your child and read the frog story aloud once, then ask them to read it back to you, pointing at each word. Tell them, "Today we're hunting for consonant blends — that's when two letters next to each other each make their own sound, like the 'sp' in Spot or the 'mp' in jump." A strong answer sounds like your child saying both sounds clearly (s-p, not "sss" alone) and finding blends in words like frog, Stan, grin, drop, flip, flat, claps, stomp, glad, tank, and pond. After the questions, try a quick sorting game: write the blend words on slips of paper and have your child put them in two piles — blends at the start of the word and blends at the end. If your child gets stuck, slow down and tap out each sound with a finger, then blend them together; you can also cover part of the word so they see just the blend (like sp- or -mp) before reading the whole word. Praise effort on the sounding-out, not just the right answer, and stop after about 15 minutes even if you didn't finish — you can pick it up again tomorrow.

Spot the Class Frog

Room 5 has a pet frog. His name is Spot. Today is Friday. Liz and Stan grin at Spot. They drop crickets in his tank. Spot can jump and flip! He sits on a flat rock by the pond. Stan claps. Liz can stomp. Spot is a glad frog. We love Spot a lot.
