The Best Class Pet
Students read a short modeled opinion paragraph about choosing a class fish, then answer four questions and complete a draw-and-write activity sharing their own pet opinion.

Offline - with you
Print the pages for offline work together; the answer key is for you.
Read the short paragraph aloud together, then say, "The writer told us what they think is the best pet. What did they pick, and why?" A good answer names the opinion (a fish) and gives the reason from the passage (it is fun to see, we can feed it, or it is calm). Next, invite your child to share their own opinion using the sentence frame: "I like ___ because ___." A strong response names one pet and gives one simple reason, even if the reason is short like "because it is soft" or "because it is funny." If your child gets stuck, help them by listing two or three pets they already know (a dog, a cat, a bunny) and asking, "Which one would you pick?" Then ask one easy question to draw out a reason, like "What do you like to do with it?" or "How does it make you feel?" Finish by having your child draw their pet and copy or trace their sentence underneath, so writing feels fun and doable.
The Best Class Pet
I think a fish is the best pet. A fish is fun to see. We can feed it every day. It will swim in the tank. I like fish because they are calm. We will love our class pet.
What this lesson checks
- Writing plan: The writer said a fish is the best pet. Add 2 or 3 more sentences to tell one more reason a fish is the best pet. Use words like 'I like' or 'because'.
- Writing plan: Now it is your turn! Pretend our class is picking a new snack for snack time. Which snack do you think is best? Write 2 or 3 sentences. Start with 'I think ___ is the best snack.' Then tell why using the word 'because'.
- Writing plan: The writer thinks a fish is the best class pet. What pet do YOU think is the best? Write your own opinion sentence. Start with 'I think ___ is the best pet.'
- Writing plan: Here is a weak opinion: 'I like cats.' This does not tell WHY. Make it better! Write 2 sentences. Start with 'I think a cat is the best pet.' Then tell why using the word 'because'.
